Is this the golden age of stupidity? Yes, it is, and we will know just how stupid some people in high places — and the media — can really be when the much anticipated  4th annual World Stupidity Awards (WSA) organised by ARSE (The Academy Recognising Stupidity Everywhere) — in conjunction with New York publisher Disinformation are announced on September 20.

The WSA salutes achievement in stupidity and ignorance and the awards in various categories — including the media — are decided by worldwide Internet vote on September 20. Thousands across the world have already cast their vote online at www.stupidityawards.com since it opened on August 15.
“The Romans had coliseums; the Egyptians had pyramids, we have stupidity, says official World Stupidity Awards Spokesmoron, Robert Spence. “With all that we know today, the fact that we can rush into wars, destroy our planet and act like complete idiots, and then, be proud of it, shows we are in an era of super stupidity.”
You want to bet who’ll walk away with the Stupidest Man of the Year award? You can. Bettors can put money down on who they think will win such categories as Stupidest Man of the Year, an award in which one nominee is Oklahoma district court judge Donald Thompson, who operated a powerful penis pump beneath his robes during three trials while they were in session. But, here’s a tip. Thompson is not the favorite. Other nominees for Stupidest Man of the year are: Dick Cheney, vice-president of the US; Michael Brown, former director of FEMA and Kim Jong IL, North Korean dictator.
This year, several new awards have been added “to reflect the time we live in”, says ARSE, including the Stupidity Award for Being Most out of Touch with Reality and the Stupidity Award for making an Already Stupid Situation Stupider and the nominees for the prestigious Stupider prize include Mel Gibson who offered to urinate on the floor after being arrested for drunk driving and the Oops! I did it again Britney Spears for almost dropping her baby for photographers after driving recklessly with him.
But the award I’m really looking forward too is the Media Outlet which has Best Furthered Ignorance and there are five nominees for it, all running neck and neck. But my guess is the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten which published the controversial cartoons (it also has the distinction of being nominated for The Dumbest Moment of the Year Award) will breast the tape.
But the closest race will be for the Stupidest Statement of the Year and the Stupidest Statement by President George W Bush. In the first category there’s Senator Hillary Clinton, who, when speaking about kids of today, said: “They think work is a four letter word!” Snapping at her heels is Mel Gibson’s retort to a female Sergeant in Malibu, California following his arrest for drunk driving: “What do you think you’re looking at, sugar tits?” But my vote has gone to Harry Whittington who told the Press after Dick Cheney shot him in the face on February 26: “My family and I are deeply sorry for all that vice-president Cheney and his family have had to go through this past week.”
And the Stupidest Statements by Bush? That’s a tough one. You decide on which one of these will win:
“Peter. Are you going to ask that question with shades on?” to legally blind reporter Peter Wallsten.
“Wow! Brazil is big.”
“It’s in our country’s interest to find those who would do harm to us and get them out of harm’s way.”
