Gulf Weekly Captains all set for action

MORE than 80 players took to the field for the annual Captain’s Day at Royal Golf Club on Saturday morning. Incoming captains, Sanjay Lal & Caroline T’Kint ‘drove’ the club into 2018 from Hole 10 before everyone headed out onto the course to test their sporting prowess.

The competition itself was split into three divisions – Men’s Flight A (handicaps 14 and below), Men’s Flight B (handicaps 15 and above) and the Ladies Flight.

Sam Hill won the ladies flight with 32 points, beating ex-club captain Dena Wales on the count back. Gary Owen took first place in the Men’s Flight B with a very impressive 38 points, beating Arnaud Robert by one point. Young Ronan Smith scored an incredible 40 points in very tough, cold and windy conditions, winning his division by 5 points to runner-up Gordon Bennie, who had 35 points.

Barry Hobday successfully defended his Captain’s Quaich title and Dena Wales was the first winner of the Ladies Captain’s Quaich, which outgoing captain Stacey Thomas introduced.

The third Member’s Appreciation of the Year event took place after the Captain’s Day presentation on the Masbah Terrace. Executive Chef, Paul Gindra and his team prepared a selection of food and beverage pairings with music from local band, Passed Masters.
