Now’s the time for many to pack the suitcase and head off to the far flung, distant and exotic places around the world!

One of the things to consider, especially when traveling to the more remote and unspoilt destinations is what to eat and how to avoid the nasty upset tummy, especially if you’re travelling with kids. The only thing worse than suffering an acute case of the “runs” is having to cope with a child or two with them as well.
Some key points to remember are that children’s systems are not quite as hardy and resilient as an adult’s and care should be taken in making sure they have a good source of clean drinking water. Buy bottled mineral water if possible and, if not, boil your water first and use purifying tablets to ensure it’s as clean and safe as possible. If you are finding it difficult to satisfy their hunger with the local food (too spicy, too rich, too yucky!!) then fruit is always a good option but make sure you wash it well first or peel it to be on the safe side.
When dining out you are unlikely to find a restaurant with a big gold M above the doorway (thank God!) so it means your little treasures may have to eat something new and unknown; depending on the establishment you may be able to get something relatively plain but do try and get your kids to try new and more exotic things although a blindingly hot and spicy chili encrusted curry is probably not the best way to go as some may consider it bordering on cruelty.
Your destination will obviously have a major impact on the cuisine available and so will your budget. Since Bahrain is an incredibly diverse and multi-national environment most children are exposed to more than one type of cuisine so they tend to be a bit more adventurous when it comes to food, except my son who is a little sod when it comes to trying anything new. Do try and expose your kids to new and different tastes and flavours and wherever you’re going this summer have a great time.
