There’s a lot of hoo ha going on at the moment as to whether or not Prince Harry should be going off to serve his country in Iraq, with a commander in Muqtada Al Sadr’s Mahdi Army quoted as saying: “One of our aims is to capture Harry, we have people inside the British bases to inform us on when he will arrive”.
Military service is all part and parcel of being a royal but Prince Harry seems to genuinely want to serve his country rather than just following on in a family tradition. I can’t help feeling sorry for a guy who obviously wants to do the job he has trained to do but is being held back because of who he his. He’s threatened to leave the Army if he’s not allowed to see active service and who can blame him but the flip side of the argument is the fact that just by the very nature of who he is, his presence in Iraq or Afghanistan is an added danger to anyone he comes in contact with, especially his own platoon. Trying to keep him safe would be a logistical nightmare and much as I can understand his frustration, it seems somewhat selfish of him to insist on something he knows could put others in more danger than the situation already calls for. As for whether or not the Mehdi Army really does have people inside the British bases is another matter. If they do then admitting to it has just done a good job of blowing the whole covert aspect of it. Duh!
