More than good looks

It seems that Bahraini Wafa Janahi made the right decision when she decided to turn her back on the naysayers and went ahead with her plans to take part in the second annual Miss Arab World, where she beat off competition from 19 other contestants to walk way with the crown.

The competition is said to be aimed at finding the woman who most embodies the academic and humanitarian achievements of Arab women.
Wafa pulled out of the competition soon after being named Bahrain’s candidate amid claims and newspaper comments that the contest was nothing more than a beauty contest but changed her mind and went ahead with the contest.
If the picture above left is anything to go by then those who claimed it was just another beauty pageant weren’t far wrong – with the majority of the women taking part wearing revealing figure hugging outfits that seemed to have nothing relevant to do with the aspirations of the competition – but Ms Janahi stood out from the crowd with her modest clothing and covered up hair and seems to have come out on top as a result.

Wafa Janahi beat 19 other contestants in the second Miss Idealistic Arab World contest in Cairo, Egypt, to be crowned Miss Arab World 2007. The pageant featured 10,000 participants. The law graduate will now head various humanitarian projects connected with the competition. A total of 16 Arab countries were represented in the contest, including Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Libya, Palestine and Sudan. The first runner-up was Egyptian Shaimma Mansour, followed by Lebanese Rula Bahij, Tunisian Khadija Mrabt, and Libyan Rima Al Kseri. Above, Wafa proudly flies the Bahrain flag in triumph and, right, is crowned.
