Dear Stan, ,The Consumer Protection Directorate would like to pass its regards to you and would like to bring your attention the importance of correct information published especially in Shilpa’s Shopping List in which we’ve noticed incorrect information in the issue of 19-25 September, after checking the prices by our inspectors.

The information indicated the wrong price for Kellogg’s cornflakes and Chesdale cheddar, as shown below:

Kellogg’s cornflakes 375 – 0.895 (GulfWeekly) – 0.640 (Consumer Protection Directorare inspectors)

Chesdale cheddar (12 slices) – 0.775 (GulfWeekly) – 0.665 (Consumer Protection Directorare inspectors)

Furthermore, the price of Kellogg’s cornflakes 375gm in the issues of September 12 -18 and September 26 – October 2 was also incorrect.

We hereby request your kind attention to correct this information as monitored above.

 Editor’s note: We are honoured to find out that Shilpa’s Shopping List is examined each week by the Ministry of Industry & Commerce, consumer protection.

We need to point out that the list is simply a ‘spot check’ on one given day each week and is simply a guide for readers and a method of keeping the kingdom’s supermarkets on their toes as far as prices are concerned.

Shilpa personally visits seven of our leading supermarkets each and every week. The list is correct at the time she visits the stores and represents the prices paid by customers at that time.

It is heartening, however, to hear that prices come down shortly after GulfWeekly is delivered to our readers as stores attempt to woo customers and take a competitive edge.

We thank the Ministry for reading GulfWeekly in such detail and supporting our efforts. Together we can make a difference.

Dear Stan,

Please can you print something about the lack of parking space at our university and the increasing violence in Bahrain that nobody wants to admit exists.

I am a student at AMA University. I’ve been there for two-and-a-half years and almost everyday my classmates and I have complained about the parking situation at the campus in the Gufool area.

At the beginning of this week my friend (she doesn’t want her name printed) was threatened by a Bahraini man who got into her car as she had parked in the dark, between the trees and bushes behind AMA University, as there is no other option.

The man was wearing a mask and gloves and was carrying a knife and threatened to stab her if she acted “smart”. He stayed in the car threatening her for 45 minutes and pressing the knife into her ribs every time anyone walked past. He finally got out of the car and she called us in tears about what had just happened. We called the police and had to go to the station to make a report – they didn’t even search for the attacker.

The story was printed in the GDN and Al Ayam the following day and we reported the incident to the school director.

The school promised to make changes in the parking situation, but has anything been done? No! They said they will make sure the parking in front of the building will be for ‘girls only’ but that appears to have been just words.

There is an empty area which we used for parking until the owner decided to make a charge to AMA for the land. They refused, so he has closed the land and we can’t use that space anymore.

This is not the only incident that has happened in Gufool to AMA students. Three months ago a crazy man followed two female students and before that one man started to push one of the students in the same area.

Something should be done! If one of the students gets robbed, stabbed, raped or even killed will it change? Will they do something about it then or will they keep giving us the excuse that the campus will be moving to Salmabad in January?
