Teenage tennis ace Ross Henson takes another step this weekend at securing junior world ranking

status in the qualifying matches of a top tournament in Dubai.

The St Christopher’s School sixth-former’s driving ambition is to become a professional tennis player by the age of 21 and he is hoping to secure sponsorship in a bid to make his dream come true. If not, he could be at the point of no return.

Top coach Dan Barrie, director of the Dilmun Sports Club’s tennis academy, said: “I have taught hundreds of students and Ross is one of the most dedicated, committed and talented players I have come across.

“He has tremendous potential and simply needs the necessary financial support at this stage of his development to progress.”

Ross, has been playing since the age of four and won the BBK Under-14 National Tennis Championship in Bahrain.

He is studying AS level biology, graphics, English and PE but loves nothing better than doing battle on the tennis court, and said: “It’s sometimes gladiatorial – eighty per cent in the mind and 20 per cent physical.

“Some opponents are very competitive and give you the ‘eye ball’ but I enjoy the competitive nature of the sport!”

In Dubai he will be facing more experienced and stronger players in a Level 4 tournament but tennis is very much in his blood. For example, dad, Adrian, 50, a regional training manager, was a former county level player in the UK and is rated Number 3 on the Bahrain veteran circuit.

He said Ross had received “tremendous support” from the Bahrain Tennis Federation but now needs to start playing on the international arena if he is to progress further.

Ross has his sights set on competing in six tournaments which will take him and his coach as far away as Thailand and India if sponsorship of around BD6,000 can be secured.

The ideal partner would be an international company whose brand the young Saar sporting sensation could highlight on and off the court. For more information contact coach Barrie, a US PTA certified professional, on 39697114.
