IT’S the ‘silly season’, and it’s been festive, fun and frantic (just the way we like it) and kind of ‘animal-centric’ too.
My week started off with a trip to the Dilmun Club stables last Saturday with my family and a throng of horse-loving kids for a lovely morning of dress ups for kids and horses alike.
Both kinds of animal looked amazing in their many and various costumes.
A pony cross-dressed as Rudolph the red nose reindeer and won a rosette for ‘best dressed’. After the costume parade all the ponies and kids competed in a friendly ‘jump off’ and my poor little daughter Hannah had to hold onto her helmet and looked like a rag-doll as she clung to Arthur’s back and went for the longest trot of her life over the nine ‘jumps’ (the poles were laid on the ground for the little kids).
She was all smiles after her ride and was convinced she had won because she had gone so ‘fast’. All she wanted in the whole world was another ride.
I’d like to make a special mention of the grooms who did an outstanding job. Well done to them all.
They had to be very energetic as they had to lead the little kids ponies round the course (at a trot) at least five times each.
Also I’d like to say a big thank you to all the ladies at the stables who organised such a good fun day that was so special for the kids.
It’s a great time for parties, and I’ve been invited to a couple this week. Thanks to party animals Nadia and David Swan for a great time at their place.
We’re especially grateful to their daughter Lianna and her friends for looking after Hannah so splendidly. She had a great time and therefore so did we.
And also thanks to Barbie and George for inviting us into their gorgeous home where my wife Wendy and I were lucky enough to be on the "A" list with all the rich and famous of Bahrain (usually we’re lucky to rank a “C”). I look forward to seeing the photos in ‘Hello’ magazine.
As you’d know, all the kids are off school enjoying their school holidays. They’ve not been calling me at the radio and making many requests in the mornings (most of them sleep to midday over the holidays) so I’ve been amusing myself and the listeners by doing something that I call the ‘open house’.
I’ve been inviting any requests on the morning show and it’s been fun and amazing doing things differently for a while. BUT, the other day a few people were telephoning requesting for… (How do I say it, more heavy ‘rockier’ music) ... so on this particular morning, from about 7.10am I was busy playing ‘classics’ such as Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd and Status Quo. Then, a guy telephoned to ask for Megadeth!
“Hmm!” I thought and took a look through my CDs to find a track, which I played at 7.30am. A few minutes later I got a phone call from a listener who started shouting at me! “What's wrong?” I said, and the lovely lady answered that she wakes up to me at 7.30 every morning when her radio alarm clock clicks onto Radio Bahrain 95.5FM and she listens to my dulcet tones and ‘smooth’ tunes. .. BUT on this morning she said she jumped out of her pyjamas she was so frightened as the heavy rock sound of Megadeth dragged her out of her dreams!
Good point I thought. I would not like to wake up to Megadeth either … although 7.30am sounds a pretty civilised time to be getting up.
On Saturday just gone, we went down to Al Areen Wildlife Park. It was the coldest day of the year so far (and quite possibly the windiest too). It was also by the busiest I’ve ever seen it there. We had to queue!
We met up with some friends and had a good walk around before taking a bus trip to see every kind of gazelle, goat, oryx and sheep you can imagine, as well as giraffes, emus and ostriches. After the ride we had a picnic, and after that, the kids even got to have a donkey and cart ride (which they all agreed was the highlight of the day).
Before going home we went for a walk round to see the tortoises and porcupines, donkeys and camel.
The donkeys were Hannah’s favourite and she managed to convince me to share some of my apple with them. Nearby, lots of local kids were ripping out grass and feeding it to the camel. So we went over to have a look and my wife Wendy took a picture of Hannah and me with him.
The camel got very close and cosy and I was so pleased that it was being so friendly, until that is, it tried to bite off my arm.
The fleece I was wearing was a ‘grassy green’ colour and the silly animal thought I looked so delicious it decided to give me a try. Thankfully it was a good thick fleece, so I still have my arm but my elbow is really bruised and battered.
So take it from me; don’t go near hungry camels when you’re wearing green.
