A NEW route for the 31st Bahrain Half Marathon proved a success for runners and spectators alike.

Delighted organisers say the 21.1 km event was a "huge success" and it is set to continue growing in popularity.

Under the patronage of Bahrain Athletics Association (BAA) president Shaikh Talal bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, the Bahrain Road Runners - under the umbrella of the BAA - organised the race from the Marina Club last Friday.

Adnan Al Qassab, chairman of the BRR, said: "All the runners appreciated the new route even though it was windy on turning back to the Marina Club.

"One runner described it as 'really safe and interesting' and particularly praised the number of water stations on the route.

"Another had recently competed in a race in Dubai and thought our event was far better organised which is heartening to hear.

"All in all, the event was a big success - we all had a great day."

He made a special vote of thanks to the marshals, helpers, time-keepers, the Ministry of Housing & Works for closing lanes on busy roads towards Manama and the police for controlling and directing the traffic.

Medical assistance and support was also provided by the Ministry of Health and the Jawad Group offered free Gatorade energy drinks at the many water stations.

Every race finisher received a certificate of participation, with printed details of their name and time, while fruits and chocolates were offered courtesy of the Bahrain Workshop Company.
