The hugely popular Ghost Whisperer starring Jennifer Love Hewitt returns to Showtime tomorrow and every Thursday at 9pm.
Melinda Gordon is a young woman living in the town of Grandview who has the ability to see and communicate with the dead. Each episode deals with one or more ghosts seeking Melinda's help in relaying a message or completing a task that will put the spirit to rest.
Inspired in part by the work of famed medium James Van Praagh and of Mary Ann Winkowski, a real-life communicator with spirits, Ghost Whisperer explores the spiritual side of life and death as Melinda navigates among the dead and the living in her sometimes chilling, sometimes heart-rending and sometimes amusing attempts to act as an intermediary between the ghosts and those they haunt.
Executive producer Ian Sander described the latest season as having a new tone: "Its Ghost Whisperer as you've never seen it before." He and fellow executive producer Kim Moses noted they'd brought in a new executive producer this season, to help create an even broader mythology "that basically is about an underground," Sander explained.
"There is an underground under Grandview. We come to find out that not only does Grandview have mysteries that have been covered over, but we find out that Melinda Gordon too has mysteries in her past that are starting to be uncovered, such as her ancestry. We meet her father, who is dead. We meet someone who claims to be her brother, who is clearly mysterious. And we come to find out about this underground. There are mysteries under our town that go back a century and a half."
Sander continued to explain that they've been driving the show "to a little bit of an edgier place, a place that's a little bit more of a mystery, making it a little scarier and a little bit more mysterious".
