Please stop the hatred

I recently hosted my school's global village fashion show which showcased the traditional outfits and dresses of 10 different countries across the globe.

It was a fun-packed and educational event that taught many of our students the value of respecting the many different cultures around the world.

However, I am saddened by the fact that many of our own youth and adults disrespect expatriates who work day and night in our kingdom.

Some of our young ones consider men from the Indian sub-continent in Bahrain as "bhaiyas" or "brothers" but others believe that these poor men are our slaves and that they do not only work under their employers but also work under anyone who is "upper class" than they are.

I am getting sick and tired of opening up local newspapers and reading that some expatriate was beaten up by a Bahraini. This has got to stop now.

Is spreading hatred and violence the answer? Is that the way to teach our young people how to behave? No, it is not.

We must show all people living in the kingdom respect - it is the only answer to living in a multi-cultural world.

I grew up and was raised in a multi-cultural household since my father is a Bahraini and my late mother was Filipina. Fortunately, I realised that even though I came from two very different cultures, I was still a human being living on this earth to respect and love others no matter what their language, skin colour or origin was.

Is it not time for other people in Bahrain to wake up and change their actions before it is too late to set a good example for future generations?
