Bahrain trio head for BMW world final

Three Bahrain-based golfers will be travelling to Argentina later this year to take part in the prestigious BMW Golf Cup International Finals at the Jockey Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The trio topped their respective handicap sections in the Bahrain qualifying round which took place this weekend at His Majesty King Hamad's golf course at Safriya.

South African Rob Lane won first place in the 0-12 section of the individual stableford tournament with a total of 71 points after achieving an excellent score of 42 points in round one followed by 29 points in round two. Hamad Salem was a close second with 70 points (35, 35) and Abdulla Sultan was third with 69 points (33, 36).

In the 13 - 28 handicap category Bahraini Ahmed Sultan took first place with 72 points (33, 39) while Don Warren came second with 71 (33, 38) and Adel Almoayyed was third on 70 points (34, 36).

In the ladies section, Debbie Lane took first place with a score of 64 points (34, 30) and so will join her husband Rob on the trip to Argentina. Runner-up in this category was Olive Wagstaff with 63 points (25, 38) while Alison Cowley finished third with 59 points (31, 28).

Over 80 golfers took part in Friday's first round with the leading 33 per cent of players from each category going on to play a deciding round on Saturday morning.

The tournament, which was co-organised by staff from the Royal Golf Club, was rounded off with a lunch and prize-giving ceremony where prizes were presented to the winners by Zayed Al Zayani, managing director, Euro Motors.

The BMW Golf Cup International is the world's largest amateur tournament series and was started in 1987.
