Sales of General Motors (GM) vehicles in Bahrain are up 17 per cent this year on the same period last year, according to figures released by the company. GM has registered year-to-date sales of 2,126 units in the kingdom.

GMC continues to forge ahead as the company's best-performing brand in Bahrain, with year-on-year sales in the first three quarter of 2008 up by a massive 90 per cent to 765 units. This growth was principally attributed to the continuing popularity of the full-size SUVs, the Yukon and Yukon XL, as well as the impact of the Acadia luxury Crossover SUV, introduced to the market last year.

The Chevrolet brand accounted for around half of all GM sales in Bahrain this year, with total sales of 1,078 units, while the Premium brands of Cadillac, Hummer and Saab registered sales of 283, with the Hummer H3 and Cadillac CTS accounting for almost two thirds of these sales. The most popular GM models for new car buyers in Bahrain, were the full-size SUVs - the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and the Cadillac Escalade - followed by the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the GMC Acadia and the Chevrolet Optra.

At a press conference held in Beirut, Lebanon, Terry Johnsson, president of General Motors - Middle East Operations, said: "It is extremely rewarding to see that the General Motors line-up is attracting customers across the region and in Bahrain in increasing numbers, as demonstrated by these latest results. At the same time, we acknowledge the commitment and effort of National Motor Company in helping to make this success possible.

"Looking forward, there are exciting times ahead for GM, with models such as the Chevrolet Traverse, Cadillac CTS-V, Hummer H3T and Sierra Denali just around the corner. GM really grabbed the headlines on September 16, our 100th anniversary, when we announced our vision for the future by unveiling the production version of the electric vehicle Chevrolet Volt."
