Bahrain's art scene sees the opening of Artlounge 3 tomorrow evening at the Al Aali Shopping Complex in the new extension area, writes Anasuya Kesavan.

It will have on view works of five contemporary artists - Abbas Al Mousawi, Ali Khamees, Jaffar Al Oraibi and Mohamed Al Mahdi from Bahrain and Zaman Jassim from Saudi Arabia.

Mohamed Al Mahdi, 32, from Muharraq, was the recipient of the most prestigious art award of the kingdom - the Al Dana prize at the 34th annual fine-art exhibition.

He is admired for skilfully portraying abstract emotional expression and is the only home grown artist who exhibited at the recent contemporary art exhibition - Art Paris-Abu Dhabi.

Jaffar Al Oraibi, 33, from Budaiya, considered by art critics as a rising star, will be showing eight abstract paintings that speak about beauty and relativism.

Using oil and charcoal he will be presenting three paintings on Marilyn Monroe, two on Mona Lisa and three other abstract works.

Jaffar has exhibited internationally and was honoured with the top award at the Qatari diar art symposium this year. He was also invited to present his paintings at the China Art Olympiad Biennale in Beijing.

Well known Bahraini artist, Abbas, 55, also from Budaiya, will be showing some of his old market scenes in his unique and well recognised style in acrylic paints on canvas.

Ali Khamees, 47, from Budaiya, has a background of a photographer. Using his special etching technique he is displaying eight compositions that bring forth the relationship of black and white. He has also exhibited widely and has won international awards.

Abstract artist Zaman Jassim's work is influenced by calligraphic elements and heritage.

Originally from Al Khobar, Zaman, 37, is recognised for his style of adding elaborate and colourful design elements to traditional costumes on his canvas.

The exhibition will run until December 6. Art lounge holds regular art events to showcase artists' in a relaxed atmosphere.
