Ten Bahraini students will be offered the opportunity to finish their final high school year in the US.

The aim of the exchange programme, funded by the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is to build bridges of international understanding between Americans and students from Muslim countries.

Youngsters, both disabled and able-bodied, aged between 15 and 17 years, have been invited to apply for 10 places on offer.

Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation (BDSF) managing director Essam Kamal said: "All students in Bahrain whether they are able-bodied, deaf, blind or physically handicapped can apply for this unique opportunity."

After Monday's deadline a committee will evaluate all the applications and decide who gets to go on the dream scholastic adventure.

Mr Kamal said the one-year scholarship is sponsored by The Youth Exchange and Study Programme (YES) and Mobility International USA (MIUSA).

"During the one-year scholarship the students will attend public schools and live with host families," he said.

"They will also take part in seminars and community activities, including an outdoor challenge course co-ordinated by the City of Eugene."

The YES programme was established in 2002 to promote mutual understanding and respect between the US and countries with significant Muslim populations by offering high school students from these countries an opportunity to spend an academic year or semester in the US.

MIUSA, YES co-ordinator Susie Grimes, on a visit to Bahrain, said all the students' expenses during their stay would be covered. "In addition to completing their final academic high school year the students will be given the chance to learn more about American law in regards to the disabled," she added.

To apply for one of the coveted places, application forms are available at the BDSF premises in Isa Town or contact Mr Kamal on 39651618.
