British rockers Nine Below Zero are set to make their debut Middle East performance on the island this week.

They will perform for two concerts at the Dilmun Club, Saar, on Thursday and Upstairs Downstairs restaurant, Adliya, on Friday.

This year the band is celebrating its 30th anniversary and will release a brand new album 'It's Never Too Late' in May.

Bass player Gerry McAvoy said: "We all still enjoy the thrill of getting on a stage whether it is a festival or a club whether it's to 10,000 people or 100 people. It's the connection between the audience and the band that makes it worthwhile.

"Also the recording side has its magic moments, seeing an idea grow from its infancy into a song on a CD.

"The new album is the first self-penned CD for six years and features 12 brand new songs"

Emerging from the vibrant London pub and club scene of the late 1970s, their arrival coincided with the punk explosion. They soon won a loyal fan following and landed a record deal with the A&M label. The band's 'Live at the Marquee' album was an instant classic.

Nine Below Zero were the first one to be featured in the classic Comic Strip sitcom 'The Young Ones', belting out a tough version of 'Eleven Plus Eleven'. From 1979 through to 1982 they played non-stop eventually headlining the Hammersmith Odeon.

The band split for a while but reconvened in 1990 selling out the dear departed Town & Country Club in North London playing to crowds of 2000 people a night and they have since played all over Europe and also in Bangladesh when they were invited by the British Council. The band even provided backing for actor and part-time Blues musician Bruce Willis at a bash at his Planet Hollywood restaurant.

The band was originally formed in South London in 1977 by guitarist Dennis Greaves and features three former members of the UK's Rory Gallagher band including Mark Feltham, Brendan Oneill on drums and vocals and Gerry McAvoy on bass and vocals. Gerry joined the band in 1991 and is currently awaiting the launch of his autobiography - 'Riding Shotgun: 35 Years on the Road with Rory Gallagher and Nine Below Zero'.

For the fans in Bahrain the band will be playing old and current songs as well as songs from their new CD.

Gerry said the band werelooking forward to coming to island and added: "For the old fans, just get along and have a great rockin' evening with the band and ditto for our new ones."

On Thursday the show begins at 9.30pm and tickets are priced at BD10 for members and BD12 for non-members. The dinner concert on Friday begins at 9.30pm and tickets are priced at BD25.
