Glock will give other drivers a run for their money

Jenson Button made a significant comment in the aftermath of the Chinese Grand Prix that sums up both the attraction and problems that Formula One has for the average sports fan.

In what appeared to be just a throwaway remark to Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber whilst waiting for the winner's ceremony Button could be audibly heard saying "you had great down force".

No comment about what great drives the Red Bull men had just completed and no congratulations on the first ever win for the British team let alone a one-two. His initial remarks were just about the dynamics of the car they happened to be driving.

A great achievement it was, though, for the team 'that gives you wings' in the rain-affected race they dominated from start to finish. Had Vettel not crashed out after a collision with Robert Kubica in the opening Grand Prix of the season then he would be a lot closer to championship leader Button in the overall standings.

This season has seen a remarkable turnaround with Ferrari, McLaren and BMW all having serious problems with the new regulations and the introduction of the controversial diffuser. Heidfeld, Hamilton and Kovalainen have at least scored four points each which is four more than Kubica and both the Ferraris.

Whether these so called big teams will sort themselves out by this weekend's Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix is doubtful but no doubt they will at some stage this season and it is a matter of whether the likes of Button, Vettel and Webber can make the most of it.

Currently, the best way to measure an individual's performance is comparing team-mates so Button is ahead of Barrichello and Vettel is ahead of Webber whilst the big names are pretty similar. However, one man beginning to show signs of a driver with very promising talent is Timo Glock of Toyota.

The German went from 20 on the grid to finish fourth in Melbourne, kept his place in third until the end of the race in Malaysia and jumped from 19th to seventh on Sunday in China. This is an impressive start and one that he will be hoping to build on this weekend and the fact that Toyota have been testing at the track during the winter will be an extra benefit.

World champion Hamilton is not having the best of starts and his team are also clouded in controversy after the events in Melbourne and the hearing on April 29 about the part he played in the deception will surely be playing on his mind. Meanwhile, Massa, who has won the last two Grand Prix in Bahrain, will be very keen to complete a hattrick but it is highly unlikely he will have the car to reach the target.

If the conditions are good then Brawn will have the edge on Sunday, in my opinion, but this weekend it may well be a Toyota day and my preference is for Glock if he can have good qualifying on Saturday and set himself up at the front of the grid for the main attraction on Sunday.
