Despite the economic downturn Durrat Marina has announced that work on the BD690 million ($1.83 billion) project is still on track.

The approximately 600,000sq/m Durrat Marina development is located within the seaside resort of Durrat Al Bahrain in the southern part of the kingdom.

According to developers, Tameer and Durrat Khaleej Al Bahrain, the project is a luxury mixed use residential, leisure and retail development that will accommodate the largest and most sophisticated marina facilities in the kingdom, with approximately 400 births for boats and yachts of different sizes.

The project's chief investment officer Othman Janahi, said: "Durrat Marina is a unique project as it mixes real-estate with lifestyle.

"Our focus is on creating the perfect marina lifestyle that is only found in places such as the Caribbean or the French Rivera.

"In my opinion we are actually correcting the understanding of the word marina in our region.

"The reclamation of the three islands has ended and edge treatment is being finalised."

The project is currently in its final stages of the infrastructure design and an infrastructure tender will be going ahead by the end of the year.

The project will contain large and medium-sized villas and townhouses. Most of the residential space will be in apartments with blocks ranging from four-storeys to two iconic 30-storey towers.

Retail units will be on the waterfront and will consist of shops and restaurants/cafes within walking distance of the heart of the project; the marina, which is being designed by a renowned marina engineering firm, New Design Architectural, a French company that has created several large marinas on the French Rivera.
