THE big-hearted 'thirst quenchers' are back in action. At the weekend the young volunteers who aim to assist construction workers during the blazing summer months began touring sites around the country and giving away bottles of water and Fanta Citrus, writes ANASUYA KESAVAN.

More than 40 thirst quenchers distributed 1,700 cans of soft drinks and an equal number of water bottles in Juffair and Tubli.

The liquid refreshments were donated by the Coca-Cola Company and were kept chilled in cool boxes.

Leila Rajkumar, public relations manager at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Bahrain, said that the weekend's efforts follow the success of the group's activities last year when they first came together to serve the community.

She said: "We can't change the world but we can make a difference. It is not the most ideal solution but it is a small treat for these people who are struggling in the heat ... it is wonderful to bring a smile to their faces.

"Many of the volunteers are teenagers and we ensure that they are moving under adult supervision. The group is briefed on what they should be doing and told to give utmost importance to safety.

"We do not just barge into construction sites and we approach the foreman for permission first.

"At every event we learn something new. For instance, this year we did not find many sites in Juffair as opposed to last year. So a small team is going around scouting our route for next week."

The volunteers told GulfWeekly they were happy to be making a difference. Faria Rahman said: "It was a great experience seeing the surprise and gratitude on the workers' faces."

Tamara Mathew admitted the whole experience was an eye-opener. "I did not realise that the people worked in such temperatures," she said. And Louise Rymer added: "I really enjoyed the experience. It is amazing how small gestures can mean so much."

Every Saturday until August 15, volunteers will gather at Leila's house in Zinj to chart out the morning's activities. Those who are interested in joining the group can email thirstquenchers@gmail.com
