Somali Pirates aboard a captured motor craft fired at a US Navy helicopter which is part of the Bahrain-based mission to make the high seas safer.
The motor vessel Win Far, fired what appeared to be a large calibre weapon at SH-60B from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 49, embarked aboard USS Chancellorsville.
No shots fired struck the helicopter and the crew onboard the SH-60 did not return fire.
Win Far is a Taiwanese-flagged vessel that was captured by pirates in April and it has been used as a 'mother ship' to conduct other known pirate attacks.
The helicopter was conducting a routine surveillance flight of M/V Win Far currently held at anchorage by Somali pirates south of Garacad, Somalia, when the incident occurred.
During the flight, aircrew observed activity, but it was only when they returned to Chancellorsville and reviewed infrared radar video, which recorded the incident, were they able to confirm the incident.
More than 30 crew members remain as hostages aboard the pirated vessel.
