For the third season in a row we will see a new drivers' champion as the race for the 2009 Formula One World Championship title is very much likely to go down to the wire with only two more races remaining.
Three drivers are in the fray with Brawn GP's F1 veteran Jenson Button leading the way with 85 points, 14 more than his teammate Rubens Barrichello, while Red Bull's youngster Sebastian Vettel is a further two points behind.
At this point it would like German Vettel has only an outside chance of taking the crown but he has been having a good time in the last few races which has put him in a very optimistic mood especially after the Japan race which he won in style.
Working out the permutations and combinations, the title will be Vettel's if he wins the Brazil and Abu Dhabi races, which will take his points tally to 89, and Briton Button finishes eighth and seventh - or the other way round - in the two contests. In this case it doesn't matter where Brazilian Barrichello ends up, as, if he finishes second in both the races his total will be 87.
In case Vettel wins one race and is second in the other while Button finishes eighth in one of the races and is outside the points in the other one, then the title could be his provided Barrichello does not win the race in which he is in second place and is second behind him in the other race.
Veteran Barrichello's case for the title is a little more complicated. If he wins both the races and teammate Button finishes sixth in one race and seventh in the other then he is assured of the crown. He can also claim the championship In the event that he finishes second in both races, provided Vettel ends below him in both races and Button takes eighth place in one race and is out of the points in the other.
For the 32-year-old Button to get his hands on the crown, he only has to finish sixth or above in the two races no matter where his two closest rivals end up.
In the event of a tie the title will be Button's since he has won six races in the season so far, while Vettel and Barrichello have three and two victories, respectively, notwithstanding the outcome of the last two races.
But Button will be mindful that compatriot Lewis Hamilton led by 17 points with two races to go in 2007 and still did not take the title - something Vettel will have in the back of his mind.
Meanwhile, the Constructors' championship is more or less Brawn's as they are just half-a-point away from getting their hands on the trophy.
All-in-all, F1 fans are in for an exciting time at the Brazilian F1 this weekend and Abu Dhabi's inaugural race in another couple of weeks' time.
