Khalid comes out in flying colours

KHALID Al Khatry clinched victory in the Grand Prix class of the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (Breef) season-opening Showjumping Championship held at the weekend at the Mounted Police Centre grounds in Budaiya.

Al Khatry, who is also a prominent endurance horse rider, steered Bashayer to top spot in the main class of the day-long event.

Ten riders battled it out in the Grand Prix class, which featured one round with jump-off. But it was Al Khatry who finished the jump-off with the best time of 42.81 seconds and without any faults.

Behind him was Ali Isa, riding Al Khalidiyah Aberdeen, in 42.26 seconds but with four faults, while Basel Al Dosseri came third on Chamaecy.

The opening event of the 2009-10 season consisted of five other classes, including two adults, two juniors and a combined class for both.

Oscar Lauri steered Mr Bombastic to win junior one class. Finishing in 27.45 seconds, Oscar was ahead of Laura Wilkie (27.79) who came second on Safe and Sophie Appleton (29.63) rounded up the podium on Al Khalidiya Femore.

Seven riders took part in the junior two class which was won by Natasha Owen on Duell Time in 25.82 seconds. She was followed by Ali Abdulrasool (29.05), riding Ghroob, while Hussain Al Afoo (25.71) came third on Muhajer.

A record 22 riders were in the fray in the adult one class which was won by Hasan Jaffar, steering Cool to finish in 46.60 seconds. Not far behind was Amelia Boyd (46.95) on Rangerino and Mahesh Amritlal (49.93) was third on Pascal.

Veteran Sami Ghazwan won the adult two class which was an accumulator with joker. Riding Chilli, Ghazwan completed the contest in 31.87 seconds and was followed by Salman Essa (33.06) on Calypso. Raja Kiyani (36.95) came third on Uderiekus.

Tawfeeq Jabber, on his horse Seniora, came on top in the open class for both juniors and seniors.

l THE Bahrain show jumping national shows and the national show jumping team's calendar for regional events has just been released. The Home Centre Cup contest will be staged this weekend.
