My head says United ... my heart says Arsenal

THE weekend's results could turn out to be the crucial moment of this year's race for the Premiership title as Manchester United went top by four points from Chelsea and two from Arsenal having played one game more than Ancelotti's team.

Coming from behind to beat Liverpool would normally have been satisfying enough for Sir Alex Ferguson but Blackburn securing a late draw at home to Chelsea would have been the icing on the cake.

Ancelotti, meanwhile, must be wondering where his season is going after a dramatic exit in the Champions League to Inter Milan last week which was then followed by this disappointing result at Blackburn.

The sight of previous manager Jose Moriniho exiting down the Stamford Bridge tunnel before the final whistle must have been bad enough but given the two have history in Milan derbies it must have been very difficult to take.

A Premiership and FA Cup double would ease the pain but this now looks as precarious as it has done all season and, of the three teams at the top of the table, they are ones that are not in form. Previous campaigns have taught us that confidence and momentum are everything and Arsenal and United are way ahead in this area and it's going to take a Herculean effort to reassert themselves.

Arsenal have been written off at least four times this year and only reached the status of dark horses for the title at the very best ... but now things are different. Without Van Persie they have confounded their critics and gone on a winning streak that could see them lift the trophy.

What is most in their favour are the remaining fixtures. Games at home to Wolves, Man City and Fulham are interspersed with away fixtures to Birmingham, Tottenham, Wigan and Blackburn and, to be frank, how many points can you see being dropped?

Only Spurs away looks anything other than straightforward given their form and they have such fantastic record over their neighbours since Wenger took over that they will be strong favourites for this game too.

Of course, it is impossible to think all these games will result in three points but it would be no surprise if they bagged 21pts from them and finished on 88 for the season. This would then set a very severe test for United and Chelsea who don't quite have a run in like this.

Chelsea have to go to Anfield and United have to go to neighbours City and they also have to play each other so whatever happens one of them will be dropping points automatically which will leave the door wide open for Wenger and his young side.

Chelsea are struggling to overpower lesser sides and the absence of Cole, Essien and Cech are really beginning to take their toll and unless they rediscover their form quickly they could be out of the race in the next two weeks.

Tonight's game away to bottom side Portsmouth is a great way to get back on track but should they slip up here in any way then it will be the end and only the FA Cup will remain.

Ferguson has got his team on their usual second half of the season roll and having avoided Barcelona in the Champions League until at least the final he can be very pleased with last weekend's action.

A lot, though, depends on one man at United and should anything happen to him then their chances would diminish considerably and that, of course, is Wayne Rooney who scored again last Sunday and remains in the form of his life.

It is too close to call at the moment but points in the bag are always an advantage so it is United who have the edge followed by Arsenal, because of their fixture list, and then Chelsea as they are out of form and low on confidence.

For once the Premiership might actually go down to the wire with all three teams involved and they are the best teams by some way this year. Whilst the scrap for the last Champions League place goes on around them all eyes will be on the three big guns to see who can hold their nerve most when the games get tight in the final quarter.

My head says United will win an unprecedented fourth consecutive title but my heart says Wenger can stir his young talented players into one final push and grab a Premiership title their football deserves.
