SCHOOLGIRL gymnast Halle Sword - a Year 3 student at St Christopher's School - was taken to hospital by ambulance after breaking her arm whilst warming up for a floor exercise during a regional competition in Dubai.

The eight-year-old needed an operation to repair the damage to her right arm and was not well enough to travel home to Bahrain with the rest of the CHAOSS gymnastics squad.

Family friends have been by the child's side at the Medcare Hospital as arrangements were made to bring her back to her home near Saar.

The incident happened as Halle attempted a 'backwards walk over' whilst preparing for competition and fell awkwardly twisting her arm in the process.

School nurse Miriam Sandy was in the travelling party and immediately recognised the seriousness of the injury. It appears the child's arm was broken in two places.

An ambulance crew arrived swiftly and she was rushed to hospital. According to friends, although she was in shock and pain she was more concerned about how the injury could curtail her love of writing and school work.
