New 'adjustable rear wings' to allow drivers to overtake

Formula 1 has made moves to improve the ability of its drivers to move up the pecking order by enhancing the ability to overtake next season, writes Abu George.

There have been complaints for several seasons that in recent years overtaking has become harder as a result of the 'bad air' churned up by the car in front, particularly on the increasing number of street circuits.

Listening to the drivers and race fans, F1's legislative body, the FIA World Council, has ratified a proposal from FOTA (the organisation representing the teams) to introduce 'driver adjustable rear wings' when following within one second of the car in front. This will allow drivers to reduce aerodynamic drag and down force theoretically enabling them to reach higher speeds, particularly on long straights. It is hoped this will increase the opportunities to overtake.

This is not be confused with McLaren's F-Duct system which allows drivers to 'stall' the rear wing, again resulting in greater speeds as this has now been banned with effect from next season.

The FIA has also confirmed Pirelli as the exclusive tyre manufacturer from 2011 and has clarified rules concerning overtaking when the safety car is deployed.
