Too little sleep bad for teenagers' diets: Teenagers who sleep less than eight hours a night on week nights eat more fatty foods and snacks than those who get more than eight hours of sleep a night, the latest medical research has revealed. Medics said getting too little sleep can result in chronic changes in the diet that can increase the risk of obesity, especially in girls.

Diabetes drug may keep lung cancer at bay: The common diabetes drug metformin may hold promise as a way to keep smokers from developing lung cancer. US researchers said metformin prevented lung tumour growth in mice exposed to a cancer-causing agent found in tobacco smoke, and because it is already widely used in people, it may be worth further study.

Mental 'exercise' linked to faster dementia progression: While staying mentally active in old age has been linked to a delayed onset of dementia, seniors who engage in such brain 'exercise' may actually have a faster rate of decline once Alzheimer's is diagnosed, researchers have reported.
