SAFETY-CONSCIOUS Scandinavian automotive giants Volvo launched the new S60 model at a ceremony at Bahrain City Centre, writes Charlie Holding.
The launch by Motor City, the sole distributor of Volvo in the Kingdom, took place in the presence of company officials and spectators who flocked to get a glimpse of the new model.
Speaking at the launch, Motor City CEO Bashar Darkazalli said: "The all-new Volvo S60 is an exciting new addition to the Volvo range and other vehicles in its segment, as it embodies all the characteristics of a sporty sedan and has advanced technological features."
Volvo is a brand renowned for it's impressive list of safety credentials and, according to the company, this is the safest model to date. The S60 boasts a long list of features including Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake, Driver Alert Control, Blind Spot Information System, Lane Departure Warning, Roll Over Protection System and Side Impact Protection System.
Sathish Nair, brand manager for Motor City called the S60 a 'contemporary car', which he believes will be a big seller in the kingdom. He said: "Volvos have become much trendier and I'm sure the Bahrain population will like this dynamic and sporty model."
Meanwhile, Thomas Ernberg, regional managing director for Volvo stressed the additional safety benefits of the model. He said: "Road safety is a big concern in the Middle East and I think that Volvo can contribute a lot to making driving safer.
"To date, the S60 is the pinnacle of Volvo safety and besides being secure it also offers great driving dynamics."
Under the bonnet , the T6 petrol engine has a displacement of 3.0 litres and now pumps out 304 hp and no less than 440 Nm of torque. It acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and its top speed is 250 km/h. The interior has also be redesigned and kitted out with some impressive tech. The infotainment system consolidates information from the audio unit, navigation system, mobile phone and other functions and presents it on a five-inch or seven-inch colour screen in the upper part of the centre console.
