TOP Bahraini player Nasser Yacoob Saleh has booked his place in the forthcoming Volvo Golf Champions by winning the Bahrain Golf Association Team Qualifier, making history as the first player from the kingdom to appear on the European Tour on home soil.

Nasser had finished as the leading Bahraini in the King Hamad Trophy, but English professional Andrew Marshall took the only place on offer.

But the Bahraini went one better this time around, defeating Hamad Mubarak ... but only after a dramatic three-hole play-off.

The father-of-four said: "Everything has to work well together but my last putt at the 18th hole in the play-off was the winning shot that helped me break the tie."

Nasser, who started playing golf on the Awali sand course at the age of 16, added: "I am very excited and looking forward to playing at the European Tour event."

He will line up alongside a galaxy of top professionals including Thomas Bjšrn from Denmark, New Zealander Michael Campbell, Todd Hamilton from the US, Swedes Peter Hanson and Robert Karlsson, the Italian trio of European Tour Rookie of the Year Matteo Manassero and brothers Edoardo and Francesco Molinari, as well as Royal Golf Club course designer Colin Montgomerie and Englishman Ian Poulter.

The $2.2million (BD830,000) Volvo Golf Champions takes place at the Royal Golf Club, Bahrain from January 27 -30 with $283,330 (BD107,000) going to the winner.
