MESSAGE from Enrico Padula the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy to Bahrain:

The Festival Italiano has brought to Bahrain one of the most significant examples of Rennaissance art captivating the values of humanity, freedom and creativity.

We chose the Renaissance Period because this is the root of our current culture. I don't think that Italy would be so important in fashion and design today if we did not have this artistic heritage.

Today in Bahrain the image of Italy is contemporary - be it architecture, sports, fashion, design or technology - but for a more complete picture we need to understand where all this comes from.

Also, Bahrain has a very lively artistic scene which I very much enjoy. It is all contemporary as it should be, but sometimes I think you should have a look at past experiences.

From the historical background, the festival is also showcasing contemporary culture with recent movies and cuisine.

Culture is the best way to promote bilateral relations - a bridge between two countries and cultures. Last year, Bahrain was present at important cultural events in Italy like the Biennale of Architecture in Venice where its representatives won a prize. Shaikha Mai also visited another important film festival for children in Southern Italy.

In my opinion this is the best way of doing my job as an ambassador - promoting culture.

For our Grand Ball, we chose the 18th Century because this was a period celebrating the splendour of Venice.

I feel there is a growing interest for Italian culture in Bahrain because being a Mediterranean country it is close to the Arab world and perhaps offers a better way of understanding each other.

What can make a big difference is the people of a country and Bahrainis are very hospitable. I think this comes from the history of being a trading nation.

Italy has a long history of trade links with Bahrain. The big industrial complexes in Bahrain including Bapco, GPIC and Alba have utilised Italian machinery. The industrial development of Bahrain has been done, in part, together with Italian know-how and technology. We have to continue on this path.

Alongside well-known industries such as design and fashion, Italy can contribute to new and alternative energy. There are many possibilities where Italian firms can interact and even invest here.

We are currently working with the Economic Development Board on further strengthening business ties. In December, the Italian foreign minister made a historical visit to the kingdom. Also, Gulf Air has started a direct flight to Milan, which will be very helpful. We did not used to have direct flights.

We would also like Bahrainis to come to visit all parts of Italy and not just confine their holidays to the more established areas. Italy is a very diverse country with every region having its own traditions and character. There are many other places, such as Torino, the first capital town of Italy, in the South which is not so well-known as other parts of the country. The highlights of the city will be shown in a presentation during the festival.

l Ambassador Padula lives in Saar with his wife Milena and sons Francesco, six and Alessandro, 15.
