World-renowned British angler Martin James has brought his acclaimed fly-fishing academy back to the region today.

The Fujairah Salt Water Fly Fishing Academy, launched in 2006, has proved so popular in the past that Martin has returned once again to help a new season of people, including children aged 10 to 17, become adept at the popular sport.

The academy is based at the United Arab Emirates' Le MŽridien Al Aqah Beach Resort in Fujairah and runs until April 13.

"We are delighted with the overwhelming response received by the Fly Fishing Academy held in Al Aqah over the past six years. Through his unmatched fishing experience, Martin can teach anybody from a novice to seasoned fisherman the skills of fly-fishing," said Patrick Antaki, the resort's general manager.

Le MŽridien, the French-born hotel brand currently represented by 107 properties in 50 countries, was acquired by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide in November 2005.

The waters off Le MŽridien Al Aqah have long attracted fishing enthusiasts but the academy helps anyone from beginners to experienced fans to improve their skills.

Fly fishing as a sport is believed to have originated as early as the 2nd Century, but the past 30 years have seen an increase in its popularity and, with the perfect weather in Fujairah at this time of year, it is the ideal time to try it out.

"We have introduced the kid's course last year and this will continue due to popular demand. Although fly-fishing is not as easy as it looks, Martin can help people of all ages to be more successful at it," added Mr Antaki.

Fly-fishing has taken Martin around the globe, as he seeks out different varieties in the world's top fishing spots. He has also won numerous awards for his skills and said: "Some of my most memorable experiences have been at Fujairah. I love the waters here and the hospitality of the people.

"I enjoy teaching them to try their hand at this incredibly fun sport, which is one of the most relaxing sports but also one of the most rewarding, especially when you catch a fish for the first time. Since the academy began, the interest from women has increased and they're now competing neck-to-neck with the male anglers."

Martin, who hosts a weekly show on BBC Radio Lancashire, is an advocate of fishing for fun, returning all catches to the sea and choosing hooks covered with silk furs that do not cut into the fish rather than the traditional live bait.

"It is a fun sport but many species of fish in the ocean are already endangered. Anglers should be responsible for conservation as well and should spread the message of 'catch and release' so that future generations can also enjoy the sport," he added.

Le MŽridien Al Aqah has announced several packages for the academy. Non-resident two-day packages cost 600 dirhams, inclusive of lunch and taxes. The kid's course is priced at 120 dirhams (BD12.230) per day per child, including lunch and two refreshment breaks. During the course, parents have a choice of relaxing at the pool and beach for the full day and a buffet lunch with a package price of 199 dirhams (BD20.280) per person.

Fishing with Martin is available upon advance registration on April 10 and 13.
