POPULAR band The Boxtones concluded a triumphant farewell tour of the island with their first ever performance ... at a school.
The five-piece act dropped in at The British School Bahrain in Hamala to help sixth-form students raise funds for a charitable endeavour.
Band manager Brian Tierney said: "This is the first time the band has performed in a school. They were delighted to entertain the youngsters and the atmosphere was electric!"
The profits from sales of tickets and refreshments will go towards funding an expedition to Nepal in July. Fifteen students will take part in a project organised by the school and World Challenge, an organisation which runs educational projects in the developing world, offering valuable life and leadership skills to the participants.
Naufal Miswadi, 17, a Year 12 student, said: "We had just three days to organise the event but the response was amazing. We were able to sell around 600 tickets!"
The band performed a selection of chart hits as well as self-penned numbers.
Amongst the cheering audience were Year Six students Lucy Baker and Nedene Naude.
Lucy, 11, from A'Ali, said: "We really loved it!" Sarah Benyoub, 14, a Year Nine student from Saar, added: "It was really exciting. The Boxtones were fun and enthusiastic and we really enjoyed their music!"
Denis Basichny, 13, a Year Nine student, from Juffair, said: "This is the first time that the school has done an event like this and I would highly recommend other schools to do the same. The band was amazing!"
Other students were already fans, having seen the group perform around the island. The act recently played to a packed crowd at the British Club. Savannah Ammitzboll, 13, said "I love the band! They were great at the British Club and just as good here!"
The act is made up of Gary Tierney, lead guitarist, and his sister Gill, on drums - both former pupils at St Christopher's School. Gary's fiancŽ Louise Peel is lead vocalist, Roberto Wilson plays keyboards with Joe Harney on bass.
After nearly three years at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa the band has set sail this week to Dubai where they will remain until Ramadan.
Mr Tierney, Gary and Gill's dad, who li ves in Awali, said: "The band has been very popular here in Bahrain. We are currently negotiating a deal for them to come back to the island."
