THE Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain Ladies League 2012 kicked off to a thrilling start with eight teams battling it out for the coveted GulfWeekly Premiership Trophy.
Saudi’s Eastern Flames took a walloping from Royal Arsenal 8-1 in the first fixture of the night. The Flames heated up the pitch early on when their right winger Amy Goodwright bagged a goal. However, Royal Arsenal, made up of U18 girls, quickly found their form and took control of the game.
Impressive team work saw midfielder Darya Vyskegorodskaya and forward Nicole Moir pick up a hat-trick apiece, and midfielder Phoebe Licence notched a brace.
Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain senior coach Deena Rahman said: 'It was a fantastic start to the season and Royal Arsenal’s goalkeeper Lauren Moir did a fine job keeping the Flames out.'
In other games, champions St Christopher’s Seniors defeated Arsenal Dial Square 11-1, newcomers RCSI lost to the U16 National Team Bahrain 3-1 and Joga Bonito drew with Woolwich Arsenal 1-1.
U16 National Team Bahrain manager Eliana El Rahbany said: ìWe really enjoyed the match. It was RCSI’s first time in the league so this game gave us a chance to check them out. We wanted to see how they play, figure out their defensive strategy and how to win.
'In this game we proved stronger in defence and attack. But they are a good team – in fact all the teams in this league are good and you have to be on top of your game to win.'
The competitive seven-a-side contest is staged at Batelco’s sporting grounds in Hamala every Monday evening.
As GulfWeekly went to press RCSI faced Arsenal Dial Square, St Christopher’s Seniors were taking on Eastern Flames, Royal Arsenal went up against Joga Bonito and Woolwich Arsenal played the U16 National Team Bahrain.
