Gulf Weekly Bahrain outplay Malaysia to stay alive for London

London’s calling Peter Taylor’s young guns as Bahrain’s Olympic dreams remain open thanks to a last-gasp victory over Malaysia, writes Abu George.

Mohammed Tayed Al Alawi gave Bahrain a 25th minute lead before Malaysian substitute Admad Bakri slotted home an equaliser in the 76th minute. Midfielder Hussain Farham notched the winner and all three points in the 88th minute.

Next comes a vital encounter against Syria who replaced Japan at the top of the Group C standings following a 2-1 home victory against the footballing powerhouse in the Asian Football Confederation third round qualifiers on Sunday.

Bahrain currently sit with six points in third place but just three points adrift of the top two with games against both sides coming up.

The group winners automatically qualify for London 2012. The runners-up will have to endure a play-off series with the three other Asian group second-placed teams. The winner of that series of games will then have to take on a representative from Africa for a final coveted Olympic Games slot.

Bahrain face Syria at the National Stadium in Riffa on February 22 before travelling to Japan for the March 14 clash.
