George Benson brought the 2012 Spring ofCulture Festival to a thundering close at Arad Fort last Friday.

I’ve never bought any of George Benson’salbums, but I love live music and will take anything on offer, so I wasseriously surprised and impressed by the standard of the George Benson band.

As the concert progressed I realised justhow much of his music I knew, without actually knowing it was him!

The venue was sold out, and it was clearthat I was among some hardcore Benson fans. I was soon hooked myself – George’sunique brand of cool and up-tempo jazz was a heady mix, and it was soon obviousto me why George Benson has 10 Grammy’s to his name.

He is the jazz-guitar virtuoso his fansclaim he is. By the end of the evening the whole crowd were out of their seatsdancing to George’s rhythms, including me.

The other members of the band were just asslick as George, and they worked like a well-oiled machine, a veritable ‘JazzMachine’.

If you were there then I think you werevery lucky. I imagine it will be a long time before anything as slick as GeorgeBenson and his band perform here in Bahrain again, roll on Spring of Culture2013.

Ian Scott, Awali.

I was in Bahrain from April 7- 13 tocompete in Milset’s Expo Science (I eventually won the ‘best scientificresearch’ prize) and I decided to answer the quiz question on the EruditelyEsquires page when I spotted it in GulfWeekly.

However, as I am no longer in Bahrain Icannot take the free coffee prize. I do have a small request, though. Could youplease feature me on the GulfWeekly website? I want to show it to my friends!

Taha Ercoskun.

Editor’s note: Dear Mr Ercoskun, we’redelighted to assist – your email will be featured on the letters page atwww.gulfweekly.com so that you can prove to your friends your trip to Bahrainresulted in further glory. It’s a shame you couldn’t have celebrated with adouble espresso!

And lucky readers now have the chance towin TWO coffee prizes in this week’s quiz on Page 18.

I was enjoying an afternoon on Amwaj beachlast Friday. A group of people nearby were also enjoying themselves which wasfine until they left, leaving behind several bags of rubbish.

I feel that people visiting our beachshould show more respect for others and the environment.

There are several wheelie bins up and downthe beach so there is no excuse for this behaviour.

These people then drove off revving their4x4s. The jet ski boys were also driving far too fast and far too near peopleswimming in the sea. This is an accident waiting to happen.

There seems to be no help from security whosometimes just come and look at the jets ski boys then drive off having donenothing to intervene.

Concerned Amwaj resident, name and addresssupplied.

Attached is a receipt issued in September1940 – rent for a shop priced Rs. 7/ – which at today’s exchange rate would bearound 0.052 fils!

I got this receipt a few years back nearthe British Club. I wonder if anyone remembers the shop owners Salman binHusain Al Matar or the tenant’s Guruji Tailors?

Menenker, by email.
