Rough with the smooth

The first time I drove a Touareg was during its launch back in 2010. I put the off-road capabilities of this state-of-the-art 4x4 to the test around the Ras Al Khaimah desert and it did not disappoint.

This time I had the opportunity to see how it handles on-road and, no surprise, it came up trumps again.

Obviously there’s a huge difference between navigating sand dunes and Manama’s highways but either way, you’re in for an enjoyable ride if you’re cruising in this mid-sized SUV.

Discerning petrol heads will attest that it bears an uncanny resemblance to the pricier Porsche Cayenne – understandably as the Touareg was co-developed with Porsche as part of a cost-sharing initiative.

Under the bonnet the Touareg boasts a V6 FSI direct-injection 3.6-litre petrol engine, which means it is exceptionally quick off the mark. The interior has been built for comfort and features leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof and memory seats.

In terms of space, there’s no shortage here. It can comfortably seat five people and there is loads of room in the boot to accommodate the weekly shopping.

The infotainment system is something special. Located in the centre stack is a touch-screen display which can be used to adjust everything from the air conditioning in the front and back, the radio, the 3D satellite navigation, the driving mode and even the BlueTooth hands-free feature.

However, my favourite feature is the voice recognition software. Simply press a button on the steering wheel, say the function you want and the car does it for you, well, within reason anyway.

‘Radio’, I said. ‘Radio’, the car replied before tuning me in to Radio Bahrain. ‘Phone’, I said. ‘Phone’, the car repeated while searching for my mobile on BlueTooth.

Ok, so it’s not exactly Kit from Knight Rider but hey, it’s a step in the right direction!

When off-roading the traction and stability controls come in handy but the best feature this SUV has while on-roading is the auto hold function. With the touch of a button and by pushing down on the brake, you can remove your foot from the pedal and the car stays in place ... ideal for the congestion around Mina Salman on a Thursday.

While cruising around Manama I was very impressed with the way the Touareg handles. The drive was smooth and fluid and the steering is remarkably responsive.

Since it runs on a V6, there’s no forgetting about the power at your disposal. Once I found a suitable stretch of highway I put my foot down and was soon barrelling along. It’s easy to forget how fast you’re going because the ride is so smooth but luckily there’s a large digital speedometer to remind you so you can keep to the speed limit.

Whether you’re cruising around the city or dune bashing in the desert, this Volkswagen can handle the rough and the smooth.

The Touareg starts from BD15,490. For more details, contact the Volkswagen showroom in Sitra on 17459977.
