Being a ‘Third Culture Kid’

When asked the question ‘Where are you from?’ I often stumble when coming up with what should be a simple answer.

Technically I am English, as both my parents are from England, yet being born in Bahrain and having lived here my entire life, I can’t quite say that I am truly English. Equally, I can hardly call myself a Bahraini, leaving me with the question ‘What is my nationality?’

However, thankfully I have discovered that I am not alone in my confusion.

Recently, I came across the term ‘Third Culture Kid’ and was enlightened by its definition. The term refers to people who have spent their childhood in countries and cultures other than their own.

According to studies, Third Culture Kids are at a disadvantage as it is said to take years readjusting to their passport countries and they suffer a reverse ‘culture shock’ on return.
Although I remain confused as to my exact nationality, I feel as though my upbringing has not disadvantaged my life, rather made it better. It has allowed me to be more accepting of different cultures and traditions, a trait that I am thankful to have developed.

Life here has allowed me to rejoice in my nation’s greatest events, as well as be a part of Bahrain’s joyous traditions.
