Daunting challenges ahead

The prospect of moving to the UK is looming as my life as a university student draws ever-closer. Adjusting to living on my own is a daunting, yet exciting, challenge that almost every student will have to adapt to.

However, for Bahrain expats, such as myself, going to university will most likely be the first time in our lives we’ve not had a maid to perform our domestic chores.

Ever since I was born, I have always had a maid who would visit our house and do the general household cleaning; such as tidying and washing the dishes, a concept that my family back in the UK are in disbelief about. Having a maid come in to do the cleaning, or even sometimes cooking, is commonplace in Bahrain. To some, their maids are even part of the family, raising the children from young ages whilst the parents are at work.

So for me, and many other Bahrain expats, not only will we have to adjust ourselves to the new environment of university, we will also have to learn how to do our own laundry, a chore that I have previously relied on my maid to perform!
