After recently returning from a weekend away in Dubai, I realised that I had never fully appreciated how effective the Dubai Metro is in terms of the improvement it has had on travel in the city.
This successful development in public transport provided a cheap, clean and speedy way to easily move about the city.
Whilst riding on the metro, I was reminded of the days when travelling around Dubai meant queuing a long time for a taxi and then sitting in endless lanes of traffic and sometimes driving for hours.
It also got me thinking about the limited forms of public transport we have here in Bahrain, and perhaps how an innovative way of travel would be beneficial to the development of this country.
Although I do take a regular bus to and from my school, I realised that never, at any point during my life in Bahrain, have I ever travelled via the public buses. It made me realise that I depend heavily on taxis to transport me around the country, but with the many reliable taxi services available this isn’t a major hindrance.
When taking into context the size of Dubai in comparison to Bahrain, it is obvious that a speedy transport system is much more fitting in the UAE. However, I can’t help but imagine the positive effect an improved public transport system would have on this country.
