An impressive final round of 46 points handed Paddy Gallagher and Mohammed Ahmed Rashid the title of the 10th Annual National Day Tournament at the Royal Golf Club (RGC). Their score of 45 points from Round One was added to their Round Two score for a winning team score of 91.

The pairing of Brendy Santiago and Salman Al Bader missed out on the top spot on count back, finishing on the same team total while Ryan Shim and Soud Hamad Al Atham finished third with 90 points.

“We dovetailed very well all the way round,” said Gallagher after the prize-giving ceremony. “If I had a bad hole, Mohammed would make birdie and vice versa. I have had a brilliant two days out on the course and I’m thrilled that we’ve been crowned National Day Champions 2012.”

The 36-hole tournament was held over two days on the RGC’s Montgomerie championship course. Expatriate players were paired with a Bahraini player in a pairs betterball Stableford format with the top 30 teams from day one battling it out in the final round to decide the overall winners.

The club also hosted a consolation scramble competition for those who didn’t make the top 30. This was won by the team of Mark Underwood, Sami Al Khayer and Abdulla Al Yacoob with a nett score of 59.3.

A Junior National Day competition also took place on the Wee Monty par 3 course. Sarah Alejandro and Ahmed Mohammed took the title with a two-point advantage from Mathias Hopman Ruh and Khamis Abdulla with 31 and 33 points respectively.

“We’ve had a great National Day Tournament and it’s only fitting that a brilliant team score of 91 points takes the overall title,” said John Wilson, the club’s sales and  golf events manager. “We’ve had over 200 competitors of all ages and nationalities taking part in these events over the past two days. It’s a great tournament which goes from strength to strength each year. Thank you to Shaikh Ebrahim bin Khalid Al Khalifa who came up with the idea for this event and has been a strong supporter over the years.”

The final day’s play was rounded off with a lunch and prize-giving ceremony in the Majlis building.
