BREEF (Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation) held the second Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Jumping Challenge Events of 2013 for the Northern Governorate at Saar on Friday.

The format was two junior classes, the last a challenge class, and three adult classes, the last in challenge mode.

Junior One, a one round with jump-off class, kicked off the show with fences standing at 80/90cm. There were more than 20 entries and only eight managed to complete the course and remain for the jump-off.

Gabby Chakkos riding Dilmun Tashan romped to victory in a time of 34.40 seconds with no jumping faults. Also going clear to secure second place was Maud Tinsley with Dilmun Tess. Third, with a fast time of 31.94 seconds, came Ma’uuf Al Rumaihi riding the lovely Zain Al Butel who, unfortunately, had four jumping faults.

The second junior class was a round against the clock with fences standing at 90/100cm. Seventeen were in the fray on this technical course, testing both horse and rider. Abdulla Al Hashili took Thunderbolt to top position, and runner-up was Aimee Keen, the only other clear rider, astride Pastiche. Claiming his second third prize of the day, was Al Rumahihi once again with Zain Al Butel.

This class now puts both Chakkos and Al Hashili equal first, with Al Rumahih and Keen both in equal place behind.

The adult category featured another one round against the clock class. The fences were set at 85/95cm, and despite a field of 40 competitors only seven avoided jumping or time faults.

Muslim Ali rode to victory with Al Jazeera Bailey, and keeping it in the stable was Ali Essa astride Al Jazeera Mobiley in second place. Third was the talented Thunderbolt this time ridden by A Ali Ashoor.

Adult two was an accumulator class which offered points for every fence jumped, and an option at the end of two fences, one worth eight points the other worth double, if cleared. However, if this fence was knocked down 16 points were deducted from the score and the fastest one with the most points would win.

Abbas Al Ghuraifi steered Champagne to victory, followed by Muslim Alis astride Al Jazeera Pascal, and Hani Abdulla, back on form after an injury break, astride Morano came third in this class with 24 riders in the fray.

In the final class, the 12 challengers faced fences set at 115/125cm. Ali Essa rode to victory with Ashgar, followed by Salman Faraj riding Grefen. However, neither of these riders are in the Northern Area challenge, so Muslim Ali, whilst finishing third, made it to the top of the leader board.

He has 20 points with a 10-point lead over nearest rival and stable companion Fahad Taqi. One more show will be held before the final on April 12, which will offer double points to all challenge riders.

The next BREEF Show Jumping will be held on Friday at the BDF ground in Al Raffa, Sakhir.
