Gulf Weekly Trendy-looking sedan

The Mitsubishi Lancer is one of the favourites for many drivers in the kingdom and you’d be hard pressed to drive along Bahrain’s roads and highways without spotting one.

The model has been revised for 2013 and while it has some design updates, it is still unmistakably part of the Lancer family. Its flowing lines and a relatively pronounced front give the new Fortis added personality.

Once you click the unlock button on the key and slip inside, there are plenty of things that strike you about this model.

Inside is comfortable and the cockpit offers ample space for front passengers, but as is often the case with compact cars, those sitting in the back may have a hard time if they’re tall. Nonetheless, the combination of leather and fabric seats gives the cabin a unique ambience which is sure to distract from the less spacious rear seating.

As far as onboard features, there isn’t a great deal, besides the obligatory CD player and radio, leaving the driver free to enjoy the driving experience without distraction ... and the drive really is an experience.

Under the bonnet is a pleasant surprise. The Fortis packs a 141bhp 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine mated to a CVT automatic, which ensures this model has plenty of power. It accelerates well and the brakes are also very responsive.

I was taken aback while cruising along the Seef Highway at the power this unassuming car has.

I was able to overtake with confidence and when I reached a roundabout I felt comfortable that, once I’d found a safe gap, the Fortis would get me there in a hurry. It handles city driving well too and the start/stop traffic around Manama at lunch time wasn’t really an issue, smooth stops and quick starts were met with ease.

In fact, the only real complaint I have about this car is that the model I drove had ZMotors TEST DRIVE written on both sides.

Thankfully, it’s the little touches that often make a big difference and one of the most endearing things about this model is that a little message reading ‘see you’, flashes as you exit the vehicle.

However, the best thing about this trendy-looking compact sedan is that it is ideal for drivers looking for a new car on a budget.
