‘WhatsInaName’ is a new collection by Goan artist Arthur D’Souza, known for his creative experimentation and the use of new techniques and materials.
The exhibition opens at Hue in Riffa Palms on June 15. This time Mr D’Souza uses plastic and acrylic paint fused onto wood to create tactile art that is abstract and multi-dimensional.
“The new pieces reflect a ‘living image’; very esoteric, engaging in new ways each time you visit the work, hopefully stimulating the imagination, while capturing energetic expressions from a different plane,” Mr D’Souza said.
“The pieces are not titled and encourage the viewer to create a personal interpretation based on their own experiences. The lack of narrative is deliberate, exposing the multi faceted expressions within a complexity of colour and texture.
“The transitions from one piece to another are complementary; the flow is seamless without blending and yet the collection as a whole, I believe, is mystical, balanced and transitive.”
Having studied Applied Arts at a Mumbai college with a major in Photography, Mr D’Souza applied his multi-media skills to developing creative communications solutions, advertising campaigns and events before becoming a full-time artist in 2007 when the urge to explore his full potential became too great.
A resident of Bahrain for 26 years, he developed a unique art form using photography, paper and glass. His present work is a departure from photo-based art and was born of his need to evolve through experimentation.
This abstract expression has allowed him free rein to express himself without the restrictions of a pre-defined subject imposed by a photograph. He has returned to ‘layering’, using multiple layers to achieve the multi-dimensional look of his previous work. However, the new artworks are far removed from the style and content of his other work.
Whether it is the desire of the artist to be free of the confines of rigidity based on experience, or the need to express himself through unfettered creativity, the new artworks offer a freshness that aims to stimulate and encourage discussion.
