The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé is a unique car with a very distinctive personality that seamlessly blends old and new to create a model that is fresh but still unmistakably BMW.
The new model is a unique combination of trendsetting design, uncompromising sportiness and exclusive elegance, according to its makers, and I’m not going to argue with them because they’re right!
It’s definitely easy on the eyes and first impressions matter. The exterior design features a flat roofline that smoothly flows into the rear end. The recessed passenger compartment appears low and smoothly stretched and the frameless door windows are also a design element indicative of a sporty coupé.
The interior is just as sleek and has a driver-orientation typical of the BMW brand. Plush leather seats and surfaces give the model a sophisticated feel befitting any driver who values attention to detail.
The infotainment features are controlled via the brand’s iDrive system. Navigation, radio, MP3, CD, Bluetooth and system set-up can all be accessed via a quick turn of the dial, which rests next to the electronic handbrake.
Powered by a choice of two engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé offers sporty potential. The BMW 640i Gran Coupé features a turbocharging system and produces a maximum of 320bhp, at 5,800 to 6,000rpm, from a displacement of 3.0-litres and accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in 5.4 seconds.
What that essentially means is that when you put your foot on the accelerator, you practically take off, which I discovered to my immense pleasure!
This is a model made for the highway because with such power at your disposal it’s simply rude not to ulitise it. As with other models in its class, this one boasts a selection of driving modes that can be altered to suit the driving experience you want. There is an eco-mode for lower fuel consumption, comfort for a smooth and silky drive, sport for when you feel like a little more power (not that you really need it) and sport plus … which does exactly what it says on the tin.
Yes, I spent the majority of my drive in this mode and I loved every minute of it. The engine roars like a lion as the throttle response sharpens and the revs are held higher for longer. This model is so responsive that I was almost willing it to perform rather than driving it.
Thanks to the tiptronic gearbox, you have the option of switching gears manually via the paddle shifters slotted neatly behind the steering wheel, which incidentally houses a range of controls that ensure you never have to take your eyes off the road. I admire this feature because it makes me feel like I’m even more connected to the car.
Cornering was effortless and this 6-series held the road like glue, which gives you a sense of tremendous confidence.
Many learner drivers have failed their test because of their inability to reverse park … they weren’t driving this model. Mine had a rear camera, which made parking a walk in the park, even along Exhibitions Avenue where spaces are often tight and limited.
Highlights that come as standard include Electric Power Steering and Dynamic Damper Control to help provide the perfect balance between dynamics and comfort.
As with all BMW models, the 6 Series Gran Coupé features an impressive options list. Prices start from BD36,000.
