Gulf Weekly Space for a star!

Compact cars may be small, but they mean big business across the world, thanks to rising fuel costs and a growing desire to be more environmentally friendly. Now, while the cost of petrol here in the kingdom is (compared to the UK at least) low, there’s no harm in thinking about your carbon footprint.

Obviously, Bahrainis and expats alike enjoy driving bulking SUVS … and why not, they’re powerful, spacious and capable of off-road driving (or parking on the pavement as the case seems to be). However, do we really need them for running around town? That’s the question Mitsubishi is posing with the Space Star.

I’m a firm believer that a car is simply a method of getting from A to B, if it looks good and boasts all the bells and whistles, that’s just an added bonus.

I got confused while researching this model because it’s also known as the Mirage in the US. However, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, so the saying goes.

Talking of sweet, the model I drove looked like one, thanks to the lime TIC TAC-inspired paint job. It’s definitely hard to miss this nippy little number rolling along.

The Space Star is a no-nonsense type of car that is designed for the standard A to B journey. Due to its size, it’s remarkably easy to find parking around Manama where spaces are tight and hard to come by, which is a big benefit.

It sits relatively low to the ground which improves stability and it held the road well as I drove around Manama, drawing numerous looks from pedestrians no doubt admiring the eye-catching paint job.

Although compact on the outside, it’s interior is spacious enough for front passengers to enjoy. The model I drove boasted a radio and CD player which ensured I was able to enjoy my favourite sounds.

The ride was stable and fairly comfortable as I made my way through Hoora and on to the Sitra Causeway.

Under the bonnet is a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system) engine, which delivers a maximum output of 57kW at 6,000 rpm.

The Intelligent & Innovative Vehicle Electronic Control System III CVT wide-ratio transmission maintains optimal rpm for high fuel economy.

Safety is also taken into account with this model. The Space Star uses Mitsubishi’s impact-resistant RISE*3 body, which absorbs and distributes impact force to deliver high levels of occupant safety.

In my opinion, this model is particularly perfect for new drivers who are looking for an entry level ride at a wallet-friendly price.

Prices start from BD4,295.
