THE GulfWeekly-sponsored Arsenal School Bahrain Ladies League has kicked off in exciting style and it appears at this early stage that every point, or indeed every goal, could be vital this season.
After just two weeks of action four of the six competing sides are level at the top of the table with three points each.
Arsenal U21 youngsters played their first game of the season and picked up a surprise victory. These girls have grown up playing and developing in this league usually with a senior player or two supporting them.
Their development was apparent last night, as they lined-up with no senior players in the squad as coach John Mackenzie felt that they had reached that stage of development where they could stand on their own.
Despite an average age of 14, the girls beat the women of Seef Dental 2-1 in a thoroughly entertaining fixture.
The early opening goal was a contender for goal-of-the-season. Hayley Kunde struck a superb half-volley that left ’keeper Camille Jones clutching at thin air.
The Seef Dental ladies fought back and equalised through Mollie Bednarowski and the game looked as though it was heading for a draw, when a late winner from Regan McClellan gave the youngsters all three points.
In game two, last week’s winners Eastern Flames, played the Arsenal Senior Ladies. Last time the Flames played in the League, they walked away as ‘double’ champions, winning the League and the Cup, and were hopeful of repeating that feat, especially with the addition of a couple of new faces. However, the Arsenal Senior Ladies had different ideas. New signings Sam Rule and Alex Ziegler both scored on their debut.
The Ladies played some brilliant football and outgunned the Flames 5-3. Also hitting the net were Reema Alqassab, twice, and Lucy Hogg for Arsenal, while Leah Montenegro notched a brace and Amy Goodwright scored for Flames.
Next week the Cup competition will start with quarter-final matches between Joga TFA and Venus and Arsenal Ladies Red against Seef Dental.
