Gulf Weekly Bahrain battles hard at Sevens

It was a successful weekend for the Bahrain Rugby Football Club teams at the annual Dubai Rugby Sevens as both the Firsts and Colts returned with silverware.

Bahrain’s representatives were among over 200 amateur teams taking part in a host of competitions on the sidelines of the second round of the HSBC Sevens World Series over the weekend.

On day, the Firsts, Firbolgs, Golden Oldies and Colts between them registered only one victory from eight matches.
Things began falling into place on day two, starting with a big victory for the Oldies against the Lanka Lions and then continuing with a win for the Colts over Dubai Huricanes.

A draw with the Hurricanes was good enough to see the Firsts through to the Gulf Men’s League Plate Final and then the Firbolgs capped things by securing and then winning their own quarter-final clash with Riyadh.

With the Firbolgs and Golden Oldies falling at their respective next hurdles, it was left to the Firsts and the Colts to carry the Bahrain flag.

The Firsts had an early start on Saturday morning in beating Doha and then followed up with a hard-fought win over Hurricanes II to book a final meeting with Xodus Wasps.

In the final, the team produced some of its best Sevens of the whole weekend and emerged as deserving winners.

The Colts, meanwhile, successfully navigated their way past Jumeirah College II in their quarter-final, before hammering Wellington International School in the last four to tee up a mouth-watering clash with old rivals Doha in the final.

In a ding-dong battle, Bahrain held their nerves brilliantly and, spurred on by their victorious club mates and the rest of the Bahrain following, scored three tries to one to take the trophy.
