WHO would have thought fondue cooking could be so much fun? writes Stan Szecowka.
The very first time I tried one was at a teenage pal’s house in the late seventies and we were trying to impress a Swedish au pair using his parent’s state-of-the-art fondue set.
We managed to splash most of the melted cheese and later chocolate over our faces and shirts, which wasn’t very cool, as well as nearly setting fire to the kitchen table.
Not surprisingly, Eva made her excuses and left.
In the meantime, the Swiss, it would appear, have been perfecting the art and wow what a feast is in store for diners looking for a spot of something different at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain.
From 7pm onwards at Silks Restaurant, diners can sample the varied delights of classic Swiss Cheese Fondue, with Gruyere and Vacherin cheese melted in a grape beverage for a night of splendour and authentic Fondue.
There are also meatier options. I chose the Fondue Bourguignonne, featuring the tenderest of beef filet cubes plunged into hot oil on a table cooker and served with mushrooms, peppers, French Fries and tasty sauces, accompanied by a range of pickled delights. The good lady wife Kathryn devoured the Fondue Chinoise with beef, veal, chicken and fish simmering in a broth-filled hot pot, with a rice side dish and cabbage and bean sprouts.
Tasty, filling … and not a splash on my shirt!
Available every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Silk‘s restaurant. Fondue is priced at BD12.500++ per person.
