Lulu Hypermarket’s ‘Taste of India’, a grand food festival and celebration of various Indian food products and regional Indian cuisines, was inaugurated over the weekend by Indian Ambassador Dr Mohan Kumar. The festival got off to a colourful start in its Hidd outlet, with more than 80 participants in a cookery contest in the presence of well-known TV travel and cookery show host Dr Lekshmi Nair.

There was also a cultural programme featuring folk dances by Shri Gujarati Samaj, classical  folk dances and Bollywood dances. Leading clubs organised food stalls at the venue, which were judged for best food and décor, and Gujarathi Club walked away with the prize.

The cultural show concluded with a magic show by Kolkata-based magician, the Amazing David. The magic show ran every evening for the first three days of the festival and children turned up in large numbers with their families.

The hypermarket was richly decorated in Indian colours, flags, kites and replicas of modes of transport in India – bullock carts and lorry.

One of the highlights of the evening was the display of two popular Indian-made motorcycles: Royal Enfield and Honda. Scores of visitors took the opportunity to know more about these machines.

The festival continues until Sunday and the spotlight will be on different regions of India and their specialty cuisines.
