Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS) deputy chairman and Bahrain Athletics Association chairman Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa added a new feather to his cap by swimming 35 kilometres from Sunset Resort in Saudi Arabia to the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea and Spa in the Khalid bin Hamad Swimming Challenge.
His Majesty King Hamad attended the final stages of the event and greeted his son upon completion of the gruelling non-stop swim. His Majesty paid tribute to the positive intercultural spirit that marked the challenge.
The international humanitarian initiative in which 70 swimmers from various countries took part was to raise funds for cancer patients. It also highlighted the special and historic bonds between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
The event was held under the patronage of SCYS chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Members of parliament, diplomats and leading sports figures praised the initiative saying that it reflected a strong determination to confront challenges, brave adverse weather elements and swim long distances for the sake of a humanitarian cause.
Swimmers from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Spain, Slovenia, New Zealand, Australia, the US and Bahrain took part alongside Shaikh Khalid.
