ONE of the world’s favourite muscle cars, the Ford Mustang, is set to celebrate its 50th year of production with aplomb. To mark the occasion, a 2015 Ford Mustang will be placed on the observation deck of the Empire State Building in New York City.

The stunt was first achieved in 1965 when a Mustang prototype was dismantled and transported up the lifts to the observation deck. The car was then pieced back together on the 86th floor and it is believed that this is how the marque plans to do it again.

The Mustang is an iconic model, manufactured by the Ford Motor Company, and initially based on the platform of the second generation North American Ford Falcon. However, over the years has developed a look and performance all its own.

Over the past 49 years each of the more than 8.5 million Mustangs produced has been built in America, most of them close to Ford’s home base in Dearborn, US.

Thanks to its sporty look and powerful engines, it’s hardly surprising that this model has appeared in numerous films and television programmes.

Hollywood stars such as Steve McQueen, Jack Nicholson, Sean Connery, Will Smith and Nicolas Cage have all driven a Ford Mustang on film.

In the recently released film, Need For Speed, a Mustang plays an integral role in the plot.

“Mustang is the perfect example of continuing to build on excellence,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer. “It takes the greatness of the 5.0-litre V8 and V6 and pushes refinement to the next level. The car has been spot-on functionally, and now offers features and technology to further improve the driver’s experience.”

The 2014 model boasts an aggressive design featuring a prominent grille. A powerful splitter adds to the appearance, while functional heat extractors on the hood of the GT are specifically designed and placed to help move hot air out of the engine compartment and cool the engine.

For 2014 the FP6 and FP8 Appearance Package is available for V6 and GT models respectively. The package includes black-painted side mirrors and rear spoiler plus body-color rear quarter window louvers. All Mustang models with the Appearance Package get black-painted aluminum alloy wheels, 18 inches in diameter on the V6, 19 inches on GT.
Prices start from BD11,995.
